| I give this one 4 stars [out of 5] mainly on the strength of the villain (Ghostface Killer). He is ruthless, nearly invincible, has a good reason to be and laughs almost every time he kills someone (who doesn't love that??).
My main concern is that when you are watching the movie it seems like you are watching two movies. There is the movie where Ghostface is seeking his revenge and there is the movie where Li Yi Min's character ('The Kid') is enganged in some goofball comedy learning to fight. The comedy seems really out of place to me. I would have rather seen a more serious tone throughout the whole movie.
Both Jack Long (The Chess King - eventual teacher to Li Yi Min) and Mark Long(Ghostface Killer) are outstanding. Once the movie gets to the last third everything picks up (once Li Wi Min is sent to The Chess King by Simon Yeun's character 'The Cook'). The finale is awesome and will I promise will have you laughing. This is a low budget indy production, but its a ton of fun (just overlook the bad comedy). |
