Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Panna Rittikrai's first film using Tony Jaa's sister, Jeeja Yanin, turns out to be a mixed bag.
The performances by the female leads, Jeeja Yanin and Ammara Siripong are really good. The rest of the acting is just mediocre.
Prachya Pinkaew’s direction is relatively good in terms of shots and cinematography, but storywise the film doesn’t hold together well. The story had good intentions, but was really only at face value. Nothing’s really fleshed out and the plot is simply there to allow for lots of fighting.
The action scenes are good, but they’re lacking something that many of the Muay Thai Stunt Team usually brings. Much like "Dynamite Warrior", the reactions seem poor and the choreography seems uninspired. Nonetheless, there is some really great stuff and Jeeja Yanin is very talented, particularly for her first film.
I was surprisingly disappointing that this film only lands in the middle of Panna’s body of work.

Agree with you concerning the story. It is absolutely barebones. As for the fighting, it is extremely tedious with almost no variety. You may be a little high in your rating.
Bloodsport (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts "Bloodsport" is a classic, but here that's not necessarily a good thing. It's a good representation of a time where the martial arts movie market was flooded with bad corny movies.
The performances are nothing special. Leah Ayres probably does the best acting. Newt Arnold does an okay job with the direction, and the plot is just a standard tournament movie. The action is classic 80s U.S. martial arts action. Van Damme shows off his muscles and flexibility, and that’s about it. Early signs of different martial arts styles are used, but the choreography is lame and so are the fighters.
Although it's a great staple in the history of martial arts films, there's little that contemporary fans will enjoy.

This movie is incredibly cheesy, and the choreography was laughably lame, especially the supposed monkey style that was on display in one of the fights. Forrest Whitaker was really slumming it when he decided to be in this crap.
Double Team (product link) Action/Adventure / Thriller Starring Jean Claude Van Damme and Dennis Rodman, and directed by Tsui Hark, "Double Team" rises above Van Damme's usual.
Van Damme’s acting varies from surprisingly good to expectedly bad. Tsui Hark’s direction is interesting, but not like his direction in "Knock Off". The plot is relatively standard and slightly weird. The movie's good action picks up in the end. The first good fight is when Van Damme fights Xin Xin Xiong. The last fight is also good, considering the other bad action scenes.
If you're a Van Damme fan, you should definitely check this one out.

With a movie starring Van Damme, Dennis Rodman and Mickey Rourke, three of cinema's greatest thespians, it is hard to pinpoint what caused this movie to go so horribly wrong. Two stars are too many though.
Geochilmaru (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure A highly acclaimed Korean martial arts movie turns out to be an overly popularized let down.
Most of the acting is not that great and the direction appears to be almost non-existent. Plus, the movie looks like it was practically shot on home video. The story is relatively unoriginal and uninteresting, but I do give it credit for throwing in the occasional thoughts or musings about the martial arts. None of the characters are that great and many are annoying, too. Some of the suspense elements kept the story going for a short while. The action scenes are very disappointing. Many of the fighters are not very good, and those that are tend to be wasted on crappy choreography.
A true disappointment that you'll be better off not seeing.

I agree completely. Not sure how/why some people like this one. I couldn't enjoy it no matter how hard I tried.
Under Siege (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts "Under Siege" is basically "Die Hard" on a boat--a Steven Seagal classic that still holds up some of its merit.
The overall acting is pretty good. Actors like Tommy Lee Jones are, of course, great. Andrew Davis’s direction was pretty good. The action was slightly disappointing. Maybe it was just because there seemed to be a lack of action sequences. Seagal had a good knife fight, and there were a few good shootouts. The knife fight at the end was good, but was shot and cut too oddly.
Not Seagal's best, but still enjoyable.

I'm enjoying your capsule Seagal reviews dude... keep it up!
Only The Strong (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts Mark Dacasocs stars in possibly his most popular film ever.
There are no noteworthy performances throughout the film, which is sad because there are one or two talented actors in this film. I think the story was just far too corny for them to have any substance to work with. The capoeira scenes are excellent. Some hardcore capoeira fans may complain that Mark's capoeira is no good, but I think it still stands as some of the best capoeira captured on film, and the integration of the style wasn't half bad.
Very corny action movie from the 90s uses capoeria to make it above average.
Bloodmoon (product link) Action/Adventure / Martial Arts You'd expect "Bloodmoon" to be another bad action movie from the 90s, but it has a lot of Hong Kong flare that makes it watchable.
For the most part, the acting isn’t that great. Frank Gorshin is pretty good, though. The directing is good, but nothing special. The storyline is REALLY goofy. The action (which there is a lot of) is done in trademark Hong Kong style. There’s not only some good fighting, but good stuntwork, too. The choreography is very good, but I think some of the fighters need work.
If you can get past the goofiness and small production value, you'll be pleasantly surprised by great fights in this film.

I was more enthusiastic about the action in this film, but yeah, all solid points.
"Drive" is the ultimate straight-to-DVD action movie. It has everything a fan could want: comedy, action, science fiction, etc. Put that all together and you'll be nothing but entertained.
None of these performances may win an award, but they're much better than the standard DVD fare. Steve Wang's direction may not bring a lot of new insight to the genre, but he certainly knows how to direct a film. The plot is a slightly unique story about two men unlikely joined, trying to make it across country and surviving from the bad guys chasing them. I know that doesn't sound original, but trust me, they make it work.
The action is surprisingly good, even if you're familiar with the Alpha Stunts crew ("Extreme Heist", "Guyver 2", "Power Rangers", etc.). There’s some wire-fu, sped up fighting, and a lot of stunt doubles, so purists may be a little unimpressed. Each fight gets better and better as the movie goes on. There’s loads of Hong Kong influence in this movie, from the choreography to the stunts to the prop interaction. They take old ideas and expand on them in new innovative ways.
I possibly love "Drive" now even more than when I first saw it. It was "Rush Hour" before "Rush Hour", and better in some ways.
Get the director's cut, if you can. You'll be pleasantly rewarded.
