Bio: Likes: Old school kung fu and Japanese movies. Dislikes: Directors who think utilizing ridiculous monochromatic color schemes ala Kurosawa's Ran makes their otherwise crappy and mundane movie brilliant. Examples of this include "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers".
Condescending twits who lecture people about anti-intellectualism on a site devoted to old school kung fu films of all genres. This is hkflix, not Cahiers du Cinema. I am not impressed.
What a disappointment this was. A major disappointment. I would like to state that I didn't get into the hype of the first movie. I actually avoided it for some time because I didn't even want to watch it. But I did eventually watch it and thought it was great. Enter "Battle Royale 2".
I don't even know where to start on this one. "This time, it's war." Way to rip off the "Aliens" tag line. What a self absorbed piece of crap this is. Here's a movie that tries its best to have some sort of message and deep meaning, but only comes out looking garbage. Tatsuya Fujiwara (who plays Shuya Nanahara) fails big time at portraying a tough as nails terrorist leader. (A terrorist with a heart, how meaningful. Fail.) This movie is overflowing with characters with zero development, that essentially are nothing more than disposable meat. At least "Battle Royale" gets you to care about the characters. This movie could care less. The few (3) characters to have promise go nowhere.
Our lead character, Takuma Aoi (played by Shugo Oshinari) is a sniveling pussy that thinks he's a badass. Hooray, we get another douchebag as a lead we're supposed to cheer for. No! The character of Shiori Kitano (daughter of the previous film's Kitano) has promise, but like everything about this movie, fails. Riki Takeuchi (of "Dead or Alive") shows up to give maybe his worst performance ever. Quite fitting considering the film this is. Why would the Japanese military send untrained kids to fight a war for them? Why would said military fit those kids with EXPLOSIVE collars, that can only hinder the kids' chance at victory? Why would anyone actually like this movie?
Can you believe I watched this twice? I wanted to give this movie a chance, but it just plain sucks. I've seen a lot a shitty films in my day, but at least most of those were entertaining. This is a straight up pathetic attempt at being a "provocative, war" movie, that so blatantly tries to be controversial, it actually ceases to do so. Terrible.

All your points are correct. Shugo Oshinari and Riki Takeuchi were amazingly aweful. The plot was garbage and the total lack of character development killed any chance this film had at being passable.
Ichi The Killer (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure There are a lot of people who love this movie and a lot of people who hate this movie. I love this movie. It is one of my favorites. People who hate it just call it mere explotation, but I think they just can't get past the violence. A must for Miike fans.

Wow! The people who hated this film sure are "special".
This is a must for Miike fans, a breed of movie fan that insists gore for its own sake is an irrefutable mark of incredible genius. Everyone else will see this for the crap that it undeniably is.
Bow down and show some respect for one of the top ten all time greatest kung fu flicks. Lower. Let me start of by saying that I just really wanted to write a review for this movie but I acknowledge that Jay Lee probably wrote the best review for this movie already. Just giving props to those that are deserving. Now to my insane ramblings of blather that are often misinterpreted and in some cases incomprehensible due to my heavy use of logic and honesty.
This one doubles as not only my favorite Gordon Liu movie but also as my favorite Shaw Brothers movie. I know there are so many to choose from and you think that one is the best and dude over there is all like "what about the '36th Chamber'?" Well, chill, we're talking about my favorites now, not yours. We talk about your favorites in your review, sucka.
Lau Kar Leung crafts this movie and its fight scenes with inspired perfection. Gordon Liu dishes out the goods with the jack-of-all trades fu by demonstrating that old school multiple proficiency that pretty much died in the 90's when everyone could just have a single gimmick and still get by. This movie is not only arguably Gordon Liu's best martial arts performance but also Yasuaki Kurata's as well. You have to wait all the way to the end to see Yasuaki finally get down; but when he does, HOLY SHIT, he's a fuckin' smokin' now! (Maybe, just maybe, there is one "Family Guy" fan out there who got that reference. Probably not.)
Anyhow, this film has got one of the best complilations of variety in martial arts styles and weapons put to use. The Japanese performers and characters are all straight-up bad-asses, and really Japanese, unlike many other Chinese films that used Chinese actors and portrayed the Japanese as bitch-made predatory miscreants. I'm not judging, I'm just sayin'. Well, I guess to truly complete a review for this movie I got to give up my favorite fight. Damn, there are so many to choose from, but if I had to pick one favorite I would cheat and say the entire end fight with Gordon and Yasuaki, which is basically like 3-4 fights in one. I don't mean to beat a dying horse (unless it's called for or I'm bored or something), but Mr. Kurata is so frickin' slick it's unreal. The man handles a ninja-to like he was born holding one, and his crab style is one of the dopest, slickest and most creative things I have ever seen. This movie has everything for martial arts lovers including a tough chick.
I also got to say Buddha bless Dragon Dynasty for releasing these perfectly digitally remastered fu classics with the original subtitles and dubbings while including all kinds of sweet bonuses like interviews with the legends that made these movies possible. Make sure this is in your collection. Essential and severely enjoyable.

the ratings and the reviews say it all. a must have for any collector
If HKFLIX had higher star rating, this movie would be up there. The movie is amazing, it had no blood, & no finishing movies but it entertains. Plus it's a great history lesson too.
The Warriors (product link) Crime / Action/Adventure Warriors come out and plaaaaaayyy. Hell, yeah, fools, act like you know.
The essential classic gang movie. This was 1979, long before gangster rap and Jerry Springer convinced kids it was cool to bring automatic weapons to school and shoot shit up. Back then it was about the throw down. Chains, bats, knives and fists and wits were all real tough, juvenile, outlaw, bastards needed. These kids lived by a code. This adventure was as much about brotherhood as it was about survival.
One of the ultimates in sheer entertainment and adrenaline supplements. One of my all time top 20 movies. If you are not hip, get hip, 'cause "The streets are ours, suckas. It's all ours. Can you dig it?"

Its supposed to be silly thats part of its charm. There is no indication that this film was trying to be serious so just sit and enjoy the sillyness
MS10197 is probably right that this should be taken as a comedy - or something or another else than a realistic thriller, anyway - but I am convinced that it works quite well as whatever it is. "Wah-ree-urz, come out to play-ayyy!"
I think this movie is best taken as a comedy, as silly as it is. Gangs dressed as baseball clowns with a sultry radio host announcing their every move? Come on. This is just plain silly
This is a 5 star awesomely entertaining Walter Hill flick-it's a late 70's80's pic but it's timeless & the directors cut was well done a lot better then the original, I loved the comic strips that detailed the story! i agree with ur review.
The Way Of The Dragon (product link) Martial Arts total dis agree, the fight were slow, story is boring, i don't see any special about this film, why people say bruce lee is so great? has he win any world boxing match? no, has he defeat any champion? no, so he just an average human being, his movie is nothing special, just some basci kick and punch, i feel like i can do better!

mike you are an ignorante- read the books so you can understand what he accomplished and then read the books written about you.
Again Mike, this film is a product of the seventies. Bruce Lee directed, and did the fight choreography. Besides the great Chuck Norris fight, Bruce turns in an awsome comic performance!
SPL: Sha Po Lang (product link) Crime / Drama This film is very similar to "Flash Point", but I think this is the better one of the two. The story drags on a bit, but the action was great. Donnie Yen is clearly getting old, and he likes to show off a bit too much. We all know he is great, worth collecting!

I actually mainly agree with you, I'm just putting no because everyone disagrees with you. This was a great movie and I rate the fight between Donnie Yen and Jackie Wu Jing as one of the greatest ever.
The Secret Rivals / The Secret Rivals 2 [2-Pack] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure terrible, you call that kung fu? I call that dunb fu. what a waste of my money. I think I was fooled by some peoples review. it's not even worth looking at it. for old school, only watch liu gar lang's film, cause that's good kung fu guranteed, but any one else, don't even bother!

Grand master Hwang Jang Lee would disagree with you about the quality of the martial arts.
The Death Duel Of Kung Fu [DOUBLE FEATURE] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure "Death Duel of Kung Fu" is another fun teaming of John Liu and Wong Tao. It is no "Secret Rivals" or "Hot, Cool and the Vicious" but is still entertaining and action packed. Some of the plot elements are similar to the “The Secret Rivals” so it almost seems like a rehash. The martial arts action is above average but it always seems like the heroes fight the same three henchmen with the same three weapons the entire movie. Phillip Ko is no Hwang Jang Lee but is villainous and talented enough to require a double team. The western film score and shots of the hero walking alone along the countryside are quite cool. John Liu and Wong Tao are charismatic actors and talented martial artists so I recommend the film based on their performances.
The film is a solid bargin buy.

The lead villian was Eagle Han Ying not Phillip Ko and Wong Tao doesn't show an ounce of charisma. Some of your other points are valid though
The firehose fight. Keep this thought in mind should you decide to purchase this crap nugget. This movie is just weak. The acting and dialog in this flick are horrid and as many others have stated the x-ray scenes were more than unnecessary. But what about the fight scenes? Balls. Everytime they start to get going and pick up some momentum they just bottom out culminating with some ridiculous, physics- defying line work or previously noted x-ray sequences. Russell Wong was actually one of the best things about this flick but even he wasn't utilized to his full potential. That cat needs more work. The redeeming trait of this sad little crap burger is, as I previously mentioned, a fight scene in which Jet Li takes on a bunch of guys while he is wielding a firehose using a Wushu rope dart style. I don't want to say that this scene makes the whole crappy flick worth it but kinda'. If you are a Jet Li completist then you will have to get this movie for this scene alone. I did. It honestly pains me any time that I have to give a Jet film under 3 stars but it happens (rarely). Half a star for Russell Wong, half a star for Aaliyah being drop dead gorgeous and one full star for the firehose fight scene. Thanks for reading and stay into trouble.
Yeah, this is truly bad! And I love when movies are supposed to be set in L.A. or New York, and you can see the beautiful Canadian mountain ranges of Vancouver in the background. Rumblein the Bronx, im' looking at you too!
Drunken Master (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Even though I'm a huge fan of Jackie, and indeed Hwang Jang Lee, I never really felt that this movie lived up to all its hype. It is not a bad movie by any means, just not as great as it is made out to be.
It is often (wrongly) hailed as the original Kung Fu comedy, along with "Snake In The Eagle's Shadow". But the comedy isn't that funny to me, and just takes up too much of the running time for my taste.
The end fight is great. But just not enough to warrant the stellar reputation and endless praise the movie has garnered over the years, in my humble opinion.
I would take almost any of Jackie's Golden Harvest films over this one any day, even "Young Master" and "Dragon Lord".
If you really wanna' be blown away by Jackie's amazing Drunken Boxing skills, watch the superior "Drunken Master 2".

Glad that someone has the balls to disrepect this overrated film. Granted I liked it enough for the fights and Simon Yuen, the comedy is like a drill in my head.
Entirely too much "comedy". Frankly, the success of this and the resultant kung-fu "comedies" from countless imitators practically ruined the classic old-school kung fu genre. I hate this laughably overrated movie.
I understand how you feel about this film living up to its hype. I graded it on a curve because for its time it was ground breaking as slap stick kung fu comedy.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
Embarrassing admission: I had put off watching this film because there was so much hype, I was just sure it would be a let-down.
Why did I wait? This turned out to be one of the best martial arts movies I've ever seen. Yeah, sure, it's not realistic that this little chick could kick all this ass; but let's call a spade a spade: we don't watch martial arts movies for realism. Uma Thurman got to do it in "Kill Bill", and Jeeja Yanin deserves the same kind of props for the incredibly acrobatic, intricate, and downright dangerous screen fighting she unleashed in "Chocolate".
I know that giving a film 5 stars is a loud statement, and I'm not trying to state that this film is perfect. It's not. Definitely not. But despite its imperfections, the action was just so fun, the choreography so exciting and often unexpected, that I'm willing to err on the side of generosity for this little film that could.
I, for one, can't wait to see more of Jeeja Yanin. If this is just her starting point, I can't imagine what else she could achieve onscreen in the coming years.
While I do agree there was some excellent martial arts action, I don't think this movie deserves anywhere near five stars. And while I am sure the notion of a mental disability necessarily limits the actor, her performance was entirely too one-note .
Iron Monkey [1993] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
This is an exhilarating action ride with brilliant choreography by the Yuen Clan and a cast carefully selected to be able to perform perfectly. Donnie Yen, as Wong Kei Ying, is his athletic self - submerging himself in the role more successfully than he often does; Yu Rongguang, as Dr. Yang/Iron Monkey, may tend to fade slightly in Donnie Yen's more dynamic presence, but he is a superb martial artist. Tsang Tse-Man, as the young Wong Fei-Hung, is a delightfully agile performer who shines even in Mr. Yen's presence. Yuen Shun-Yi, the director's brother and a formidable martial artist himself, plays Master Fox, the chief of police, in a way completely different from the terrifying villains he previously embodied so well.
I have to give this *****, because it is executed at a level beyond the ****1/2 films I have rated - but it is not really as monumental a film as most others I have placed in this rarified category. It's not "fine art," but an action flick that is just a hell of a lot of fun.

One could definately argue that this is not a 5 star film for whatever reason whether its the excessive wirework, comparisons to other films, or even Donnie Yen, but I think it very entertaining and thats what really counts in the end.
The presence of the insufferably egotistical Mr. Yen alone is enough to lower any rating for this film. The amount of wire work is ridiculous, even considering the previous "standards" set by the Yuen family.
The Avenging Eagle (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure One of the best Fu Sheng - Ti Lung collaborations. I actually liked the storyline, and the action was very good. Highly recommended.

This is Jackie Chan and Yuen Woo Ping in perfect synergy. It's juvenile, steeped in Canto-comedy and exactly what most of us want from Jackie Chan. I like "Drunken Master" even more, but both are exceptionally good.
I just do not get the praise heaped on this movie. It is not funny, rather it is highly annoying. And to make matters worse this movie spawned countless imitators who rushed to put out their own horrible "comedies", practically ruining the genre.
Great fighting throughout. I've noticed some people see this as far inferior to Legend of Drunken Master. I don't agree. Both films have great fighting and the latter lacks the irreplaceable Hwang Jang Lee.
Battle Royale 2 (product link) Horror / Thriller Not as clever or exciting as the first film, "Battle Royale 2" still features tons of bloody action. Fans of the original movie might be disappointed, but it's still a decent war/action flick.

I don't entirely dislike this film, but it is so greatly inferior to the first film that it makes me sad. The story had already been told, and there was no reason beyond profit to go any further.
Im still waiting to see a copy with good English subtitles to comment on the plot. The action is pretty good. Jija does the moves very well but her power is not believable. She needs to work on delivery of impact but other than that action is pretty good.
"No Retreat No Surrender", to this day, remains to be one of the most underrated, most successful landmark martial arts films made in the U.S. with a Hong Kong production crew.
The film's storyline often mirrors what was done in many films of its kind, like director John G. Avildsen's "The Karate Kid" and Robert Radler's "Showdown" co-starring Billy Blanks. This may or may not be a bad thing, depending on your opinion.
But with all else said and done to create this film with the little budget it had, the film doesn't waste anytime on any one subject. The characters are colorful, quirky, and bring the very foundation that the film needs to deliver itself as a true kung fu classic for martial arts enthusiasts everywhere!
It's amazing how DVD distributors seemed to have totally forgotten this film. It's also pretty damn sad too.
In any event, hopefully it will not be long until this film, and the several films that follow it within the NRNS franchise finally get the respect and recognition that has been long earned and well deserved.
OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS: "No Retreat No Surrender 2: Raging Thunder", "No Retreat No Surrender 3: Blood Brothers", "King Of The Kickboxers", "American Shaolin", "Superfights", "Bloodmoon", "Mortal Kombat", "Drive: Director's Cut", "U.S. Seals 2: The Ultimate Force", "Special Forces", "Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing", "Bound By Blood", "Max Havoc: Curse Of The Dragon" and "The Shepherd".

The star looks much younger than her true age, but her moves are very good. I enjoyed "Chocolate," so there.
I agree with your comments concerning the production values. And your second comment reminds me of the karate classes I took years ago. There were ten year old black belts in the class; I doubt they were gonna kick anyone's ass.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure "Chocolate" was an all right movie that features a new fighting talent, JeeJa Yanin. The film really should have focused on her talent more. The fights were great but nothing really amazing. The fights were basically her just dodging, punching and kicking guys, though the people she fought were really not that great or up to Jeeja Yanin standards--they could of filmed an awesome fight with somebody that knew how to fight.
Like I said before, the action is great but not amazing. So if you're an action fan then check this one out. But if you're a person that wants a good story with amazing action then pick up director Shunichi Nagasaki's "Kuro-Obi" aka "Black Belt".

YoMama says it best. This is high quality entertainment, but makes no pretense of artistry.
I am glad you criticize this movie, but if anything you rate it to high. I am continually amused by the responses of people who act like it is heresy to claim this mildly entertaining is anything less than the greatest thing since sliced bread.
The movie does deliver action. The action is not amazing as we seen it done before. The story is very sloppy and it did feel long. I agree with "Black Belt" is a great & smart martial arts movie.
got to disagree with your review lets face it how many martial arts films have good story's there aint many most people watch them for the action so in my opinion this film serves its purpose.
While Bruce Lee was awakening international audiences to the martial arts genre at the turn of the 1970's, the Shaw Brothers were hoping to craft their own unique martial arts films; the formative years being defined by the chivalrous works of Chang Cheh (who benefited immeasurably from the involvement of real life martial arts masters Lau Kar Leung and Tang Chia).
"The Boxer From Shantung" tells the story of Ma Wing Jing with film, effectively following the typical "gangster epic" mould of an impoverished individual's rise to prominence (albeit with disastrous results). This epic production is rightly regarded as a genuine classic of the genre, featuring solid performances from all involved and several crisply choreographed set-piece scenarios (culminating in the atypically brutal conclusive sequence).
An absolute blast from beginning to end, "The Boxer From Shantung" stands out as one of Chang Cheh's finest endeavours and is one of the most engaging narrative-led kung fu films of the early 1970's.

Chen Kuan Tai is a powerful and expert performer, and this may be his best showcase. I like this very much.
I completely agree. This is one of the best, if not the best Shaw Brothers movie from the early 1970's period. The fight choreography is much more complex than the usual "swingy-arm" kung fu of that period.

...and you may have missed the real ending - which we will not discuss.
The DVD cover convinced me to check out this Shaw Brothers 1979 hidden gem. As a fan of Hong Kong cinema since the early 70's, I thought I had seen or at least heard about all of Shaw's classics, but this one was not on the list. I'm glad I took the risk and bought this must-have for the collection!
The movie centers around three martial arts students and their master seeking revenge on a mysterious and very angry kung fu villian, played by Kwan Feng, who enjoys challenging and humiliating local kung fu masters.
The story gets interesting when the three students run away from their sifu after he loses face in a defeat to this traveling master of disaster. The students run away to learn better fighting skills in order to take revenge for their embarrased teacher.
The students eventually find masters to teach them various kung fu skills and now it's revenge time.
Hats off to action director Hsu Hsia and the always flawless Hau Chiu Sing. "Five Superfighters" is a very entertaing kung fu film.

It could have used more budget, but there's nothing wrong with the action. It's a good film.
Chocolate [2008] (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure
While viewing the movie, I couldn't help but think of how awesome it would have been to view this film in a theater with other kung fu cinema fans!
The action in this movie is the kind of action that makes you say, "Daamm!! Did you see that?!" I could vividly see the downtown movie theater exploding with excitement, with every action scene.
I have to admit the start was a little slow, but something keeps you glued. Maybe it's the anticipation or curiosity of seeing martial arts cinema's newest sensation, Jeeja Yanin, strut her stuff. Or maybe it was the track record of the filmmaking team that produced this film and Tony Jaa's two smash hits. Whatever the reason, this film captivates the viewer.
The fight choreography is innovative and exciting and long overdue! My only hope is that the stunt men didn't permanentely injure themselves. Stunt work should be realistic LOOKING, without get seriously injured. Safety should always be the priority for any filmmaker!
All in all, this is a very engaging film. Go get it!
Sorry but this movie is entirely too overpraised. While it is somewhat entertaining, watching one fight is the same as watching all of them. This movie is pretty darn tedious.
Excellent and noteworthy Tarantino offering that has possibly the most pop culture "shout outs" of any movie. This might be one of the greatest revenge movies around. Jam-packed with graphic violence, good performances from the cast and that trademark Tarantino style dialog, story and direction that can captivate even the shortest of attention spans.
Only two things stop me from giving this a perfect rating. #1: As you may know already, it just twists my panties up when Hollywood makes these martial arts flicks and seem to forget to cast martial artists for the lead roles. This can often depreciate the spectrum of suspension of disbelief, but thankfully we have Yuen Wo Ping and Zoe Bell to smooth out those rough edges. #2 This movie is volume 1, meaning that it is one half of a movie and other issues and factors of volume two affect this movie as a result. I have several problems with volume 2 but we will get into that another time. Here is a little taste: Why the fuck does she bother going through all the trouble to get this dope ass, high quality sword for a five second sword fight that ends with a hokey "secret kung fu technique"?!? Her final battle with Bill was insulting. She didn't even need a sword to take on Krusty the Bill and she could have just shot up the "House of Blue Leaves" or whatever so why get the sword? But, alas, I digress. I definitely think that volume one is much better than volume two but I'm a samurai man myself (like you couldn't tell) so I can see how those cowboys out there might disaree with me.
As a film on its own that stands on an unanswered cliff hanger I give it 4.5 stars, but if I were to grade it as a whole including volume 2 I would give it 3.5 stars for the simple fact that the second act (much like "Battle Royale 2") disregards all of the sensibilities of the first act. I know that was the point but it was still annoying.
FINAL SUMMATION: Very enjoyable and energetic genre meld (it's a crime noir/kung fu/samurai/revenge/dramedy). The bloody end battles will keep you giddy for hours after viewing. Entertaining and worth every cent. Quentin cranks out quality. Repeatedly. Get it if you don't got it; you will have fun. Thanks for the time. I'll be at you.

This isn't the greatest thing that's ever come down the pike, but it's a great visceral thrill - the fights generally filmed in a more respectful full-figure than most occidental martial arts movies.
Tarantinos worst movie ever I you ask me.Terrible dialog, terrible acting and the lamest storyline I have ever had the misfortune to lay my eyes on.Stealing from basicly every Japanese movie made,Tarantino hits rock bottom with this pile of crap.
I can't agree with this. The movie as a whole is excellent filmmaking. KB is one giant epic mixing different genres not just with martial arts but with everything that QT enjoys. I think you missed that point, QT is expressing wht he adores to the audiene
KB vol 1 is like a hyper-active child. It mixes all genres from an outrageous anime, sly references 2 de palma, 70's flicks & revenge fu. While KB vol 2 took it's ritalin 2 focus on bkstory. I personally luv the whole thing,it has my fave genres in all
This movie has everything that makes Tarantino great: the incredible dialogue, the brilliant action, the jarring, but hypnotic, violence and of course the pop-culture references. Much better than Vol. 2.
I hate everything the over indulgent harmage to Martial flicks (but lack of true knowledge) and the disrespect for the martial arts uma thurman doing wushuw with a samuri sword get the f out of here - the anime was the best thing in this entire movie..
Totally agree that part 2 dragged down the quality. And as for all the shout-outs, yeah, I always kind of thought of this film as "the first DJ'd movie", it's more a hip-hop-like collage of samples and winks than an original work--but it's badass.
"Fist Of Legend" is by far one of the all time best martial arts movies as well as one of Jet's finest! Don't think of this is a remake of "Fist Of Fury" as it is infinitely superior! There are several reasons to avoid comparing the two movies.
Jet is a much better actor and infinitely better martial artist than Bruce Lee. ...ducks under desk to avoid rabid Bruce Lee fans throwing flying guillotine handkerchief thingies... If the cast and crew had tried to perfectly recreate Bruce Lee it would never have succeeded. Bruce and Jet could hardly be more opposite. Jet with some "soft" Wushu and supposedly Jeet Kune(?)
[Hmmm... I wonder what all those people are going to do with that pile of wood around that stake?] was Bruce's own style. Bruce was a straight on kind of fighter. Jet creates a circle and draws you in. So can we agree to respect each others opinion in discussing this highly charged issue? (these people are so full of sh&t they actually think I would care what they said! Respect? As If!) but it is important to treat everyone the same, no one is better or worse...(Oh I can't stand it!)
Honestly I don't think either of them can be put in a box. Jet uses acrobatic moves and is very fluid. Bruce was very much the one punch kills three people and rock hard in his attacks. You just can't compare them. So to those who disagree with me that's cool. (Idiots!)
Those who are hard core fans of Bruce can tell you all you want to know about Bruce, and you will find plenty of experts. I simply cannot see the appeal. I do not enjoy the sounds of cats being skinned alive either.
And now for something completely different we go now to the masterful martial arts.
"Fist Of Legend" is based partially on a real person living in the late 20's to 30's. He was Chinese and his name was Chen Zhen. He was studying at university in Japan when the tensions between local Japanese and Chinese who were in the country was very tense. Chen Zhen is in class when the Black Dragon Japanese gang storms into the classroom. One of the Japanese students tries to intervene and is assaulted. Jet very calmly and deliberately walks to one of the thirty guys and then completely beats up and breaks up every one, the resounding "crack" of bones snapping filling the air.
Chen Zhen suddenly finds out that his Master from his School has been killed by a Sensei of a local Black Dragon school in China. The Sensei of the Black Dragons informs Chen Zhen and Chen Zhen even reads about it in a Japanese newspaper. When Chen Zhen arrives at home the new Master, his father dead, is about to answer a challenge. Chin Sui Ho (Tai Chi Master, Crazy Shaolin Disciples, [terrible film btw]) easily defeats his opponent who behaves very impolitely. Chen Zhen is impressing the school's students with his newly learned techniques he was taught in Japan. The Master however is beginning to feel he is losing his students to Chen Zhen. The House is still in mourning and the new Master welcomes Chen Zhen home and after he pays respects to his dead Master he insists on challenging the Japanese Sensei that killed the Master. But this is more than just a standard you killed my...whatever, and now I will fight you for the sake of honor, maybe train a bit too. When Chen Zhen reaches the Dojo he encounters rude Japanese students who attack him. Bad idea. When he asks to see the Sensei the students end up scattered about with serious injuries.
The Sensei agrees to a match with Chen Zhen to settle the matter of school and somewhat racial matters as well. It's not long before Chen Zhen realizes his opponent could never have won an honest contest with his deceased Master, and without consulting the family he discovers his Master was poisoned. Then Chen Zahn is set up as having killed the local Sensei. With no one to testify knowing his whereabouts the trial is not going well until his Japanese girlfriend (the beautiful and talented Nackayama Shinobu), Mitsuko arrives in China to keep him from going to jail. Fortunately the characters become ones we care about, and not just two dimensional people walking through the film. That is one difference between the "Bruce Version" which is really another movie, and "Fist Of Legend". Chiun Siu Ho is another example. He is an excellent actor and martial artist, so why did he not rise higher in film? It's not for lack of talent, that's for certain! He plays Jet's Shaolin brother in Tai Chi Master and he is wonderful both in acting, martial arts/swordplay. Tsui Hark suggests he is too attractive, not ruggedly handsome - too cute to think he could be taken seriously. Well they were wrong! I think he could do just about any role given to him. Unfortunately he faded away as have others that should have been in more movies and deserved respect for their skills. But you have the pleasure of seeing him fight and act in this movie.
The Japanese Sensei (in real life as well) is played by Yasuaki Kurata. To say he is excellent is an understatement! This Master is skilled in the very real martial arts as well as how to look like a martial artist. He is sent from Japan to fight with Chen Zhen, and what an amazing fight it is! If you want a brief idea of this man's talent look no further than "Fist Of Legend"!
One person who has spent his life on screen getting beat up and beating up others, finally gets a chance to be a real person in a film. That man is Billy Chow. Billy has always been relegated to the "big bad guy" usually seen at the end of a movie and no matter how much bad ass he throws around he usually gets killed before he says two connected words. (Grunting doesn't count) Billy plays a tough talking and even more tough fighting Japanese general who is supposed to keep things in order as far as the Japanese possession of Shanghai. Of course that means he will be dealing with Chen Zhen and the school sooner or later. As the general he shows more depth than just a brute following orders. He believes in what he is doing in scheming and shows a love of his country, in his own way. The pre - war tensions between Japan and China are treated with tact in the movie. It focuses more on the characters experiences as opposed to the WAR. I think it makes a better and more realistic view than simply good or bad. Chow is totally believable as the general and as a major bad ass who is tough as nails, literally. Chow was injured in the last fight scene and is so humble he didn't want people to know on the set he had some wood in his leg, but the blood gave it away. This guy is amazing!
"Fist Of Legend" succeeds not only because of Jet, but because it is a story not just an excuse to watch mostly wire fu - less top of the art magnificent Jet Li!!! Jet has made many great films but "Fist Of Legend" is at least in the top three! His power, agility, speed, finesse...the man is a true Master.

I'll line up with Sgt. T rather than MS10197 on this. It's a great film, and I'll stop there.
Now Cinema, I am biased when it comes to the great Bruce Lee! However this is about how good " Fist Of Legend " is. I agree with many of your points, except for your insights on Bruce Lee.
It was awesome. But you probably already knew that. Very entertaining, funny and family friendly. You probably knew that too. But, for me, what makes this movie stand out in a truly exceptional way is its central message. The point of the whole movie is vital and connected to each one of us that exist in this whole subculture. The simple message of the story is that the world would be a better place if everyone knew kung fu. Shit, I've been saying that for years, but leave it to Stephen Chow to make it the moral of a really well told story.
There are many moments of creative brilliance and comedic excellence, yet it still maintained a good amount of homage content. Completely needed for a complete Asian film collection if only to see soccer balls get jump-spin-kicked. All around fun. And it's that good kind of humor that just makes you feel good inside like when you watched Paris Hilton go to jail.
I love fu & I love Soccer and you combined them together you get a slapstick fu movie that is enjoyable from start to finish. There should be a sequel for this film as well as Kung Fu Hustle.
I guess this is just a personal thing, but Hong Kong "comedy" in my view is about as gratingly annoying as it gets and Stephen Chow is it's most obnoxious exponent. If I wanted Buster Keaton, I would watch Sherlock Jr.
This is one of the most popular "end of Shaolin"-themed epics created by the sensational Lau Kar-Leung. It is the second of the trilogy devoted to the subject, "Men From The Monastery" being the first and "Fist Of The White Lotus" being the third.
When I use the term "devoted" I mean it in the truest sense. Lau Kar-Leung, the director, was intent to show the Chinese people in their real environment and to explain how some events came to pass that affected so very many. The movie grabs you right from the beginning. The credits are not even through when you are swept up in a frenzy of battle. The Shaolin Temple has been attacked yet again as the Ching rulers determined to finally kill all Shaolin and their sympathizers! Pai Mei is a treacherous killer supported by the Manchurians. He is a highly advanced fighter who fights with the aged last priest and kills him. Pai Mei's forces continue the slaughter as a very few Shaolin followers left try to escape. When they find Tung he is mortally wounded and insists the others, including his best friend Hung Hze-Kwan (Chen Kwan Tai) save themselves. Even Pai Mei admits Tung has died a hero. Hung is one of the few survivors and with the others that escape they realize they have no chance of survival and so seek out opera and entertainment shows that travel by boat, red boats to be more specific. In that way they can recognize supporters and be able to escape the soldiers always hunting them.
The red ships go to Canton and that is where Hung meets a spirited martial artist Yung Chun (Lily Li-li) he falls in love with upon seeing her beautiful face. They marry and she and her father join the troupe. But Bak Mei has no intention of letting a single "rebel" escape. He is informed the Shaolin escapees travel on the red boats. He sends his army to destroy them all. Fortunately they discover the plan and scatter across the land, pledging to meet again to kill Pai Mei. Life begins to seem somewhat safe again and he is ecstatic when Yung Chun delivers a baby boy they name Wen-Ding. Although Hung loves his family he finds himself obsessed by revenge upon Pai Mei. For more than a decade Hze Kwan trains hard using in the Tiger Claw form. Even as he trains he is haunted by those that have died, especially his friend Tung. Feeling as powerful as he can be with all those years of training he sets off for the old Shaolin Temple and the final battle with Pai Mei. Unfortunately it doesn't take long before he realizes he not only will lose the match but his life as well! He is the only one who arrives as agreed and is near death when his old friend Hu sacrifices his life to save Hung. But he is in bad shape physically and mentally for the loss of his great friend. With his wife nursing him back to health he is even more determined to have revenge. Amongst the vicious blows and strikes Hung is able to observe some of the characteristics and learns that you must hit certain areas, at specific times in order to best him. His whole focus now is training. He virtually ignores his son and is always talking about techniques and how to avoid them. Hung practices on a device, a human torso sized metal replica that contains ball bearings. He works constantly on improving his speed in catching the balls as they fall through the device. (I have never seen such a training device before this movie nor after.) Hung knows this will be his last chance to defeat his enemy. He is confident but also a bit sad because he knows he may not escape this time. But he is resigned to that as long as he completes his mission successfully.
His family waits but he does not return and his wife explains to their son he will not be coming back and why. Wen-Ding vows vengeance but he has only been trained by his mother in the Crane Form. He knows it alone will not be enough for the task and finds his father's book teaching the Tiger Claw style and begins to practice that as well. But part of the training book is missing, forcing him to combine the Crane and Tiger Claw style as one form, which came to be known as the Hung Gar form. Wen-Ding at last feels ready and sets off for the temple and the final showdown.
[SPOILERS] Wen-Ding is nimble and agile, managing to evade most of the strikes. But since he had perfected a skill unknown to his enemy he is at last able to kill him and bring about long awaited revenge. [END SPOILERS]
There are a couple of notes about this epic. Lau Kar Leung is passionate about representing the people, not only in fighting but in daily life as well. In every movie he directs he makes certain to show the bravery and heroism of "simple" people. One reason he takes such steps in movies about the end of Shaolin is because the Hung Gar form is his own family's form, the Hung Fist. It is said that Lau Kar Leung's father was taught by the real life Wong Fei-Hung.
[SPOILERS] There are two different versions of this film. They are virtually identical from each other except in the very last moments of the fight between Wen-Ding and Pai Mei. The first version I saw many years ago shows Wen-Ding with crane hold on Pai Mei, legs wrapped around his shoulders as he gouges out the eyes and near rips off his face and head. However newer releases stop short of any viciousness or blood by having a subtitle that says something about the hero is courageous (I really don't recall) but the point is that somewhere along the way someone chopped off the ending which I find an injustice. The movie should be seen as it was made! [END SPOILERS]

This film is a love note to the institutions of Hung Gar. I love it.
the only reason this film is good is because of Lo Leih as Pei Mei. The ending of the film, though logical, was inconsistent and invidious. Glad you liked though. :)
This movie is somewhat difficult to define. Some refer to it as a sequel or re-make of another movie ("Executioners From Shaolin"), but much is changed and honestly at points I was confused at the beginning as to exactly who the characters were fighting. To make things more confusing, Lau himself was on the set for much of the time and was doing choreography for fights or "action". Don't get caught up in the who-plays-whom in this film, just sit back and watch the action.
Hung (Gordon Liu) manages to kill Pai Mei (Lo Lieh) and is happy he can finally rest and not worry about the bad guys anymore. Hung longs to have a simple home with a women he loves. The leader of the bad guys have no intention of letting him stay alive. For revenge the clan attacks the village where Hung lives and kills everyone except Hung and his sister-in-law.
I don't know who wrote the script, but the dialogue isn't very useful to the movie itself. There are still a lot of questions left unanswered. Even after watching it several times there are several elements that cause confusion including Lo Lieh being more than one villain. Hung realizes he doesn't have the skills he needs in order to defeat his foe and his sister-in-law (Kara Hui) teaches him *soft* embroidery style that provides another skill.
Hsiao Ho is listed in the cast but I certainly didn't see him but I did notice some of the stunt men acrobatic stunts tended to be the same making me wonder if he was playing different people for action scenes.
One thing you can be sure of is better than expected fight scenes. The one-on-one are all with Liu and Lieh. The fact they are both excellent fighters and the fighting directors experience is extensive is the saving grace of the film. Unfortunately there are lengthy attempts at humor and they don't work - just way too much time talking and not enough fighting. And a few abilities that go beyond typical physical fighting skills. For example Pak Mei has the unique ability to defy gravity and simply float away from an attack by anyone. He also has a secret place in his body where his life force is contained so that if his adversary grows near the target he flies away and moves it to a different part of his body.
There are some very good action fight scenes, in fact they are the saving grace of the whole film. It is credit to Lieh, Liu and the experienced stunt fight stuntmen who make the movie worth watching. I have been told by many people into martial arts movies that this is a real classic, and a must see. I cannot go that far. It was filmed at a time when the money makers were trying to figure out why the interest in martial arts was beginning to wane.
(According to HKFlix this film is allegedly part of a trilogy, which includes (in order) "Men From The Monastery", "Executioners From Shaolin", and "Fist Of The White Lotus".)
This was not an easy film to review. I am always concerned about providing accurate information even in a small detail. But what seems to be correct, after a little investigation has sometimes turned out to be wrong. I have provided as much as I am comfortable with but I'm certain those with more experience can supply a much better review. One last thing. This does have enough decent fights to be entertaining even if are not aware of the Pak Mei background story.

The confusion of Pai Mei with his successor is a common one I have made myself, as MS10197 has kindly informed me. This is a worthy film. Where it rates in relation to "Executioners from Shaolin" is a touchy subject. I prefer the older film.
I don't even know where to beging. Lo Lieh is not killed twice in this movie, nor does he play two characters. Maybe you should watch it with your eyes open next time.
A film about Jimmy Wang Yu beating the crap out of everyone to avenge his kung fu master.
I will say this as nicely as I can: THIS IS THE FILM THAT DEFINED KUNG FU FILMS AS WE SEE THEM TODAY! It's all about who got there first and it certainly WASN'T your precious Bruce Lee. No, no, no! It was Jimmy Wang Yu. Granted, I will admit that Bruce Lee was the one who implemented real martial arts in film, but he DID NOT start this. He did not convert Wuxin Pein into Kung Fu and I will fight to the death (literally) to prove that my superior logic overcomes weak and fragile stupidity. IN YOUR FACE! :)
Anyways, now that I'm over my male PMS (if that even exists), "The Chinese Boxer" is awesome. Lots of boxing and internal bleeding with a simple yet fun story. The fights were excellent. And yes, I know how you people want to justify your silly little comments over the idea that Jimmy doesn't know shit about kung fu, that he just swings his arms around like a tool. Plus comparing him to some un-credible director or actor. Well, you are consummately wrong. Jimmy is a brawler. He just beats people to death and I think it wonderful. His screen presence is bad-ass and you will cry knowing how wrong you truly are.
Not Jimmy's best film, but still it kicks ass and I'll say it again: CHINESE BOXER DEFINES ALL KUNG FU FILMS OF TODAY! Now if you'll excuse me, I must assimilate my retard pills!

I cringe to say this, but MS10197 has it right. Wang Yu didn't so much start something new as capitalize on viewers' low expectations in the period before Bruce Lee's great films. He's a fairly good actor with little martial arts ability.
If today's kung fu movies were full of out-of-shape no skill losers who just swing their arms around and call it kung fu, then yes Jimmy Wang Yu did define a genre. As with most movies made by Jimmy Wang Yu, this one is terrible.
POSSIBLY CONTROVERSIAL BUT COMPLETELY HONEST REVIEW WARNING: You might not like it but somebody's got to say it. Holy overhyped bowl of piss on the classics, Batman! Many folks are calling this one of the greatest martial arts movies of all time but I can give you one reason that it will never make the all time top twenty. All the greats star REAL martial artists! Only one of the three main stars is a real martial artist--oh yeah and the villian, but Cheng Pei Pei is getting old, campers. She ain't what she used to be. I guess the biggest problem with the movie is that it was a Chinese kung fu/fantasy that was tailor made for the viewing sensibilities of western audiences. Mistake #1. In doing that and trying to expand to a wider crowd it winds up detracting from the offering for true Asian cinema fans by recycling so many themes that it just becomes insulting. Now, I never read the comic but I hope to god that it is better than the writing in the movie. The story of the film is basically a hodge podge collection of every single kung fu movie plot device and stereotype ever used such as: secret style, legendary hero, legendary weapon, young martial arts prodigy, forbidden romance, warrior student(who has become a master) seeks revenge of master's death by super villan, wise master must enlighten young upstart, etc. What brings the horrible generic plot together is the wonderful performances of the cast which are all quite noteworthy. I also think that something should be said of Zhang Ziyi. What is wrong with you folks making this bitch famous just because she's, what, cute? She does not look all that great or convincing doing martial arts. Apparently, now, everyone with some kind of dance background is all of a sudden a martial arts/action star. $#@*&^*!!!!! Michelle Yoeh and some phenomenal choreography from Yuen Wo Ping that is nothing short of brilliant kind of save this movie from becoming a complete Chinese/Hollywood bastardization of the classics. It is honestly a beautiful and entertaining movie and if you haven't had too much exposure to Asian cinema then I would say it's a four to four and a half star movie. However, if you have already seen most of the movies that this flick bites off then you will get where I'm coming from.

While I rate this higher than you do, each of your concerns is valid. Rather than a revolutionary departure, the film is a very competent retread of what had come before, with strong cinematography and art direction. Zhang Ziyi's character is a problem.
The story was completely incoherent. What the hell do people mean that when these people fly, their bodies are doing what their hearts aren't? THIS IS ART FILM RETARDATION AT IT'S PEAK!
Yuen Wo ping choreograph this picture- with his abilities & talent he makes any actor look amazing. Did you see the Matrix? wires can be great, & with this picture it did. Just because it is hyped up to Westerners you don't like it tht does not make sense
I think you may have rated this one a little too highly. But I am glad someone is willing to puncture the hype balloon that is Crouching Tiger. This movie seems to have been made to appeal to people who read the New Yorker. Too much wirework also.
I agree with everything that has been stated - This will never be a classic in the same way non real fu fans will consider the Matrix and Kill Bill having legendary fu status - I would Have to say Hero was a far Superior movie on every level
It's true, Zhang ZIyi, she's really not that great. I remember when this film came out in theaters I wasn't that impressed, I've been watching kung fu flix my whole life. But this movie open a lot of doors to people who never saw a martial arts pic.
The worst, most ignorant and pointless pile of shit I have ever seen in my whole damn life. I can't tell you how many people had built this flick up to me a long time ago. But, around a decade ago, I finally got the chance to watch it. It made me want to punch babies. Okay, maybe not, but I hate this flick more than I hate Oprah and I fucking hate Oprah. In my best estimation "A Clockwork Orange" seems to be some sort of compilation of frat boy wet dreams. Here, let me paraphrase the plot for you. This "gang" of scrawny, bitch-made, soft looking tools wander around town high off crack milk raping women and starting fights with other chumps. Somehow this bunch of deranged jackasses manage to win these fights. They call this cycle of mindless destruction and menacing "ultraviolence", even though it's just regular violence, but I think the term may help their balls feel heavier. Finally, the main degenerate rapist finds himself in a situation where he is forced to view the type of violence he inflicted daily and, get this, the shit bothered him! This is honestly the most mindless and pointless film that I have ever seen. Everytime I find out that somebody I know likes this flick my overall respect for their intelligence drops about 16 points unless they have a decent explaination for themselves. They never do. This flick is just as ugly and stupid as the fools who revere it. Like Jerry Springer. NOT FOR: Smart individuals that come from some sort of civilization. FOR: The average IQ is 100 so a bunch of space monkeys will love this for generations to come. FINAL SUMMATION: Balls soup.

You forgot beating the shit out of homeless people. Either way, this film is a pile of crap!
The film may not make quite as strong an intellectual argument as the novel, but this is far from ignorant and pointless. When a viewer fails to understand what a work of art is saying that is very different from it saying nothing.
This review is bad- but the movie has a lot of talent. I don't know what you & Miho have with this film. It's not suppose to be smart, but it was the first film for THX . The book is great too-you guys don't know any thing bout good movies.
This movie just didn't do it for me. I get what they were going for, and i would guess the book is better, but this film just doesn't make my "You gotta see this!" list.
I think you missed the whole point about this film. This is a classic film with a provoking premise, which is suppose to make you disgusted but translate this work to the real world & you'll see how much in common it has.
Maybe I am someone who is easily taken by hype or am overly-impressed by a director's pedigree. Whatever the case may be, I believe this movie is totally brilliant, and is one of the best of the decade, and is definitely this director's best.
Whoaa... trashing the Stan meister...!! Actually I didn't really dig this movie either! And while I have enjoyed some of Kubrick's films in the past. Im not, blindly, gonna laud his every movie with praise, because filmsnobs around the world, tells me to!
Stroke Of Death (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Wow, forgot about this old school classic, saw it way back in the day. Still think "Iron Monkey" is the best out of all monkey kung fu films. A must have.

This movie is far superior to Mad Monkey Kung Fu, even if that movies does inspire its fans to use caps when mentioning it.
5 stars are you serious- this movie was good but not great. Do you like martial arts movies? Because this & "Chocolate" are all right pictures but not worth more than a 2 or 3 star rating.
Freddy Vs. Jason (product link) Horror / Thriller A film about two icons of the 80's slasher/horror genre pitted together in battle to see who is truly dominant.
BEST FILM EVER! My god! I expected this film to be a wishy-washy, dumbed-down, worthless piece of garbage, but it was pure gratification at its finest. The Jason vs. Freddy fight scenes were so awesome that I jumped off my couch and started screaming incoherent crap just like a moron who watches sports like UFC or boxing. I am so happy they didn't abstain from bloody gory goodness, and believe me, there is a lot of it.
BEST FILM EVER! Highly recommended unless you hated the franchises. Or if you're an ignoramus.

Best film ever? You have got to be joking. And someone who spells resurrection with 2 S's probably shouldn't call someone else an ignoramus.
This movie was too stupid. I'm pessimistic about the upcoming ANOES remake, but if this is the direction the franchise was headed then I welcome the change. It was good for a F13th film, but not an ANOES film.
Casshern (product link) Action/Adventure / Science Fiction Visually pretty, incomprehensible story. Well, maybe just boring. Most of the best bits are in the trailer sadly.
I completely agree. This garbage was one of the most boring movies ever. I guess the visuals are meant to distract from an incomprehensible plot, terrible acting and the fact it is more boring than watching grass grow.
Executioners From Shaolin (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure Liu Chia-Liang/Lau Kar-Leung depicts the genesis of Hung Gar, using the magnificent Chen Kuan Tai and the amusing Wang Yu. It's a bit of a stretch to believe Wang Yu's character could defeat Lo Lieh's when Chen Kuan Tai's can't--it's a matter of Hung Gar!

sorry but i'm non compliant. wang yu is the whole reason why this film is overrated. the only reason why this film was well loved is becuz of Lo Leih as Pei Mei, otherwise this film would be nothing but garbage.
Executioners From Shaolin (product link) Martial Arts / Action/Adventure This movie probably goes #2 on my top-ten favorite kung fu movies. Lo Lieh playing Pai Mei is my favorite character. I mean, I know you're supposed to cheer for the good guys, but Pai Mei was the shit. I wouldn't even give it a 5 [stars], this movie is a 20.
