| ACTORS YOU'VE FLIP-FLOPPED ON? (134 views) | AUTHOR / DATE |
| Okay, we've done "Films You've Flip-Flopped On", what about Actors? I've got tons. Many of them are only temporary flips, like a bad actor who does a good performance in a single movie. But there are some permanent ones too...
Bill Pullman. I'd always found him totally irritating and just generally out of it, until I saw "Zero Effect". Wow, turns out I was the one who was out of it, because he's actually on the ball, it's just this intentionally offbeat weird character thing he does--he does it brilliantly. I just never really "got" it before that. Well, at least that's my take on it...
David Morse/Matthew McConaughey. Used to think they were both kind of cool badasses, but after seeing them both interviewed on separate occasions they just seemed like total airheads, and now their performances are just ruined for me somehow.
Scarlet Johansson. Man, I was obsessed with this chick. She could do no wrong. "Virgin Suicides", "Ghost World", "Lost In Translation". But then she started to be in every single movie that came out, and that first Woody Allen one she did, man I thought she was horrible. It seemed like she was reading the lines but totally didn't get the jokes. Now there's a bitter taste in my mouth when I watch her. Maybe I just need a long Johansson break or something.
Chan Sing. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like this guy is one of the most sporadic performers ever. Sometimes he's just a fierce little martial arts machine, other times he's just all over the place. What's the deal? I want to love this guy, but he's so hot and cold!?
Alexander Fu Sheng. Okay, 100% honesty...I never flipped or flopped on him. I've just always disliked him passionately. Can someone please explain the overwhelming appeal? I'm serious, I really want to know. Because I'll take Gordon Liu or any of the old school cats over Fu Sheng ANY day. Hell, I'd almost take Dean Shek over Fu Sheng!! :) | Choco 10/10/2008 9:36 PM |
| #2 | Totally agree on Scarlett. She's beautiful and talented, but she's in the worst movies in the last few years.
Kida the same for Johnny Depp...awesome resume and a great talent, but making a lot of crap recently. Blow and The Libertine are the only things of his I've enjoyed since the year 2000 (I hated the Pirates flicks, and Tim Burton seems to have lost his ability to make an interesting movie).
Fu Sheng was always a guy I could take or leave. I guess he was a handsome face who sold tickets for Shaw Brothers, but he wasn't a martial artist, despite being a decent screen fighter. I always thought he was about the same caliber as someone like Hark-on Fung. | TheDenizen 10/11/2008 7:18 PM |
| #3 | Choco! Dean Shek over Fu Shing? Dean Shek is funny but.....
Alexander Fu Shing is one of my favorites. I like the boyish charm and enthusiasm he brings to his roles. To me he is a very versatile actor, check out Shaolin Avengers, Avenging Eagle, and Grand Master Of Death. These are 3 of his best! I guess I've liked his performances since I saw China Town Kid at my local grind house theatre!
For me John Saxon, George Lazenby, Jim Kelly, and Ron Van Clief come to mind. John Saxon, Roper from Enter The Dragon appeared in many movies and t.v. shows during the seventies. Unfortunately he was hot and cold! He should have done more action movies utilizing his martial arts skills. Lazenby the one time James Bond, was also in The Stoner with Angela Mao Ying, and The Man From Hong Kong with Jimmy Wang Yu. His career was up and down. Lastly Kelly and Van Clief mostly made some bad below B martial arts movies. The Black Dragon for Clief, and Death Dimension for Kelly. | Sgt. T 10/11/2008 11:33 PM |
| #4 | Scarlet Johansson wasn't in Virgin Suicides. =)
Fu Sheng is cool. I've never been a big fan, but he's pretty cool in everything I've seen in him. There's some pretty bad ass charisma there.

| #5 | Wow, City On Fire, you're right, not sure why I said "Virgin Suicides"...musta' gotten some Sofia Coppola wires crossed in my brain since she directed LIT...it's rare that I have a total brain fart like that. WTF? Sorry! :)
To make up for it, let me be the first to publicly wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY this weekend! | Choco 10/12/2008 1:11 PM |
| #6 | Thank you. But uh, you better save it. Key words: Oct 14th. :( | City On Fire 10/12/2008 8:45 PM |
| #7 | Well I was still the first... :) | Choco 10/12/2008 11:27 PM |
| #8 | I know that there's a lot of ill will for Edison Chen. But I loved him in Infernal Affairs 2. We should also thank him for getting several of our favorite asian actresses naked and letting those pics find their way to the interweb.
I know he's not an actor (although he has acted quite a bit) and I don't know if I'd call it a full flip, but I've gone from absolutely being geeked on new Tsui Hark films to almost wishing he'd stop, it's gotten so bad. I still love the old stuff. But I've become incredibly apprehensive about everything he puts out.
Same with M. Night Shamalamadingdong. He's gone from "highly anticipated" to "please don't".
Harrison Ford used to be my god. But he hasn't made a good movie since Air Force One. I used to see his movies with no questions asked. But after having to employ a hypnotherapist to forget seeing Indy 4 it's changed all that.
And let me second the Birthday wished CoF. | Garvinstomp 10/13/2008 2:19 AM |
| #9 | Harrison Ford...don't even get me started. I thought I was the only person on the face of the planet who didn't love that guy to death. I actively avoid his films. "Fugitive" was the last one I liked, and may be the only one I enjoyed him in. | Choco 10/13/2008 10:50 AM |
| #10 | Leo Decrapio. He used to be a fruit. Now he's occasionally a bad ass. Matt Damon gets better and better now that he's not being dragged down by Ben. Shu Qi has turned from soft porn (not that there's anything wrong) into a very talented mainstream actress. As for M. Night, his movies always sucked. Now they just suck more! | YoMama 10/14/2008 4:50 AM |
| #11 | Shu Qi needed to move from soft porn to hard porn >:)
She's gorgeous IMO, but not that great an actress. She has two expressions: happy and confused. | TheDenizen 10/14/2008 1:23 PM |
| #12 | I thought her only expression was that duck-billed pouty face... | Choco 10/14/2008 1:53 PM |
| #13 | yeah, that's the confused/unhappy expression. | TheDenizen 10/15/2008 11:53 AM |
| #14 | Kiefer Sutherland- I still don't know how I feel about that johnson. I got agree with YoMama M. Night whateverhisassis is a punk. He stole his whole schtick from Rod Serling, a man who was a true genius. Apparently I only like Ben Affleck when he is in specific Kevin Smith movies. Jason Stathom seems to give some pretty inconsistant performances as well. Sometimes he's great(Lock,Stock& Two Smoking Barrels), sometimes he's lame as sin(The One). Man, he was awful in The One. He should never try doing an American accent again. It changed every scene! Whatever, I digress. That's all I got for now. | Bastard Ronin 10/15/2008 3:19 PM |
| #15 | Ronin, Jason Statham was'nt that bad in ( The One ). I mean personally it was mildly entertaining, seeing Delroy Lindo as a Badass future cop was funny. Harrison Ford was great in his early stuff but over the years that average bug has bit him. | Sgt. T 10/15/2008 7:54 PM |
| #16 | I hate to say it, but after confirming my suspicions on IMDB, I'm pretty reluctant when it comes to Pacino and DeNiro these days.
Pacino was fine in Ocean's 13, but that wasn't his show. It seems to have ended for him in '99 with 'Any Given Sunday'. He had a good blip on the radar in '02 with Nolan's 'Insomnia'. But everything else has been pretty bad. He's still an amazing talent, his choices have just been terrible. From '72-'99 he was on a tear.
DeNiro's an even worse offender. 'Analyze This' and 'Meet the Parents' were good ensemble pieces (the sequels were brutal), but he's made a string of bad choices (the gay captain in Stardust?). I'd have to go back to '98's Ronin to find something I really enjoyed.
Good news is his current project is from the director of the excellent 'Waking Ned Devine' and is followed by him playing a hitman in the new Michael Mann flick, "Frankie Machine". So there's hope. | Garvinstomp 10/15/2008 11:47 PM |
| #17 | By damn, you're right about Pacino. 88 Minutes wasn't too bad though. Everything else stunk, except for O13, which I agree wasn't his thing. Deniro..... I totally disagree. Analyze This was hilarious, but Analyze That was better. And Meet the Parents was crazy funny, but Meet The Fockers was off the chart funny. Oh, and Showtime was great! | YoMama 10/16/2008 3:28 AM |
