ALL ABOUT THE MOMITSU DVD-V880-DX
Among DVD enthusiasts, this is among the most sought-after players on the market today. In addition to supporting high definition DVI and analog output, the unit is a true multi-region universal DVD player. It has built-in PAL to NTSC and NTSC to PAL converters. It will output in PAL or NTSC, and will also work with 100-240v. The V880-DX is the premiere DVI-compatible DVD player on the market today. Unlike other DVI-compatible players, it supports custom DVI settings, analog VGA, and firmware updates. It is also all-region, supports XY scaling and infinite zoom, plays MPEG-4/DIVX discs, and copy protection can be disabled.
This player will upconvert DVD video to high definition and support resolutions varying from 480p to 1280 SXGA with varying scan rates. Being a full-spec DVD-I machine, this player will easily support high-resolution analog video output at resolutions up to 1080i, via standard component output, or with optional HD-15 VGA adapter. If you don't have a HDTV, the V880-DX will support your current television now, and your future TV or monitor.
The Momitsu DVD-V880-DX will support the following media types: DVD, DVD-R/DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, VCD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, SVCD, and VCD. It will support MPEG-1, MPEG-3, MPEG-4, MP3, and JPEG file types.
In comparison to the Samsung DVD-HD931, which also upconverts DVD to high definition, the Momitsu is a more complicated, more feature-laden machine. The Momitsu is more similar to a computer than a DVD player, while the Samsung retains the simplicity of a traditional DVD player. The Samsung will not convert PAL to NTSC. It also does not support analog VGA output, MPEG-4/DIVX playback, brightness/contrast adjustment, firmware updates, and is far less flexible with custom DVI settings. We recommend the Momitsu if you require these features and have the patience to set the player up correctly. We recommend the Samsung if you are not tech savvy and want an easy to use region free NTSC only DVD player that will bring out the best in your HDTV.
The Momitsu V880-DX is a second generation machine that features two primary improvements over the V880: A second set of DACs that provide higher quality component output, and a new, much improved waterproof, dustproof remote control.
TECHNICAL NOTES:
There is a service menu that will enable you to display firmware version, change region selection, and enable/disable copy protection. To access this menu, push the remote control buttons in the following sequence: DOWN, UP, DOWN, UP, RIGHT, and LEFT in succession, while the DVD player is on, but not playing a DVD. To set the player to all region, select "0".
The remote control included with this unit may cause unwanted interference with certain Pioneer components as it shares some of the same frequencies. We do not know of any fixes for this issue, and we will not be accepting returns for this reason. Also, this DVD player tends to make more mechanical noise than many other players. We recommend putting it in a component rack that has a door. We will not be accepting returns for these reasons stated above.
The Momitsu V880-DX has XY scaling and infinite zoom features. To understand why these features may be useful, please checkout THIS ARTICLE. As of this writing (June, 2007) all Momitsu V880-DX units sold by HKFlix have firmware version 1.1.18. If you have an older machine, you can download the latest firmware from Momitsu's Website for free, then burn it to a CD. For instructions on using these features, please CLICK HERE.
SETUP & COMPATIBILITY NOTES:
A common support request we get is regarding getting output. If you are having trouble getting output, please following the instructions below:
- Using the instructions in the technical notes above, disable Macrovision. This is necessary to get output at 720p or 1080i.
- Hook the player up to your TV/monitor using the connection you desire (e.g. Component, S-video, DVI, etc.).
- If you do not get a picture, press the button labeled "VIDEO OUT" on the remote, until you do, waiting 4-5 seconds between each press of the button. There are 14 output formats, so it may take a while to find the setting that works best.
- If that doesn't work, please consult your TV/monitor's user manual. If you have the DVD player first plugged into a switcher like a receiver, please consult the manual. It is probable that your device is causing the problem. Common issues: (a) The input must be specially enabled before a signal is able to pass through. (b) The input is not capable of accepting a progressive signal, or a signal that is in too high a scan rate or resolution. Most but not all HDTVs, Plasmas and Projectors will support the Momitsu's HD output. CLICK HERE for a list of devices that are confirmed to be compatible. If you have any questions regarding compatibility, please contact us.
- If you get a picture, but it is scrambled or the colors are incorrect, the component cables are probably connected incorrectly, or the plugs are not securely connected.

Also, please note that the V880-DX has its own separate firmware. Do not use V880 firmware in a V880-DX. HKFlix and Momitsu cannot be held responsible for any damage done to your machine with regard to firmware updates.
The box and unit will not say "DX" on it. The first generation model hasn't been manufactured in almost two years, so don't be alarmed when you receive a box, manual, and DVD player that does not say "DX".
