ALL ABOUT THE OPPO DIGITAL DV-980H
Never a company to rest on its laurels, Oppo Digital took their award-winning "consumer oriented" DV-970H, and added pro-level audio performance and circuitry that surpasses even their high-end DV-981HD. Meanwhile, the video performance has been upgraded to support 1080P.
Taking input from audiovisual enthusiasts and world-famous high-fidelity audio equipment partners, OPPO designed the DV-980H with a focus on precision rendering from Super Audio CD, DVD-Audio, HDCD and regular CDs. Its digital-to-analog (D/A) converters feature 192kHz high sampling rate and 24-bit resolution. The driving stage uses carefully selected op-amps and Japanese-made audiophile capacitors. The result of these premium components in an optimized design, is a sound stage full of tighter, more focused bass, beautiful treble extension, and incredible focus and separation for all musical instruments and voices. The tonality is warm and smooth, especially in the critical midrange.
Besides the sheer quality of the audio performance, the DV-980H is among very few players on the market that feature HDMI v1.2 support, allowing for multi-channel PCM and DSD audio over HDMI to a compatible receiver. If you don't have a compatible receiver, the DV-980H has analogue 7.1 channel output.
While in video benchmarking test patterns, the DV-980H scores a bit below the Faroudja powered DV-981HD, it should be fine for most displays smaller than 42 inches. It certainly outperforms its competitors with its smooth image, vibrant colors, and crisp detail. It includes a USB port for attaching flash drives, and memory cards containing photos, videos, and music.
You can easily bypass forced material like FBI warnings, commercials, previews, etc. using this player (press STOP and then MENU).

OPPO DV-980HD FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What are the main differences between the OPPO DV-980HD and DV981HD DVD players?
A: While both the OPPO DV-980HD and OPDV981HD are excellent DVD players with 1080P high definition up-conversion, the OPDV981HD emphasizes video performance specifically, while the DV-980H focuses more on high-end audio performance and overall value. The main differences between the two models are:
- The DV-981HD features video processing with "DCDi by Faroudja" technology and video chipset by Genesis/Faroudja; the DV-980H uses a different chipset and technology for video de-interlacing and up-conversion. While both players produce excellent picture quality, and the differences are often subtle, the "DCDi by Faroudja" technology is able to handle some tricky video content. On large TV or projector screens, the differences become more apparent. When benchmarked with contents designed to test video performance, the DV-981HD will score higher than the DV-980H.
- The DV-980H has a USB 2.0 interface, while the DV-981HD does not.
- The DV-980H supports HDMI v1.2, which allows multi-channel audio to be passed through HDMI, while the DV-981HD does not.
