ALL ABOUT THE OPPO DIGITAL DV-981HD The Oppo DV-981HD is Oppo's solution for the new 1080p displays. If you do not have a 1080p display 32 inches or larger, you probably will be satisfied with the Oppo DV-970HD. Unlike the Helios H4000, which can also output 1080p, the DV-981HD supports 3:2 pulldown, which yields a better picture. (The Helios X-series also supports 3:2 pulldown.) The 981, like the 971, utilizes Faroudja's famous DCDi scaler. This is the same chip found in high end Denon players costing thousands of dollars. The 981 is pretty much designed exclusively for HDTVs, and it does not include a component video output. It is DIVX certified, and includes all the expected universal features. It will play PAL or NTSC discs, will output PAL or NTSC, and will work across multiple power voltages. You can easily bypass forced material like FBI warnings, commercials, previews, etc. using this player (press STOP and then MENU). If you have or plan to get a HDTV 32 inches or larger, we believe this DVD player to be the best option available costing less than $600.
