ALL ABOUT THE OPPO DIGITAL DV-970HD
Oppo Digital introduced the DV-970HD as a complement to the existing OPDV971H, which has since been replaced by the OPDV981HD. The 970 is a more consumer-oriented model. It uses the same all-in-one MediaTek chipset used in many other major-brand upscaling DVD players priced below $300, while the 981 uses the Faroudja deinterlacer that powers high end players from Denon and others. If you have a large screen HDTV 32 inches or larger, you probably will want to purchase the 981. Otherwise, the 970 may be a suitable alternative, and we recommend it above our modified JVC and Pioneer players due to its excellent warranty, reliability, feature set, and value for money.
The 970 does have several features that the 981 and its mainstream competitors do not have: SACD compatibility, and a really cool media port that allows you to attach flash cards (compatible with Memory Stick, SD, MMC, and SM) and USB drives and devices.
The Oppo DV-970HD won the Product Of The Year Award from Absolute Sound Magazine for its superb audio performance.

OPPO DV-970HD FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What are the main differences between the OPPO DV-970HD and OPDV971H DVD players?
A: While both the OPPO DV-970HD and OPDV971H are excellent DVD players with high definition up-conversion, the OPDV971H emphasizes more on the video performance and the DV-970HD emphasizes more on the overall performance and value. The main differences between the two models are:
- The OPDV971H features video processing with "DCDi by Faroudja" technology and video chipset by Genesis/Faroudja; the DV-970HD uses a different chipset and technology for video de-interlacing and up-conversion. While both players produce excellent picture quality and the difference is subtle, the "DCDi by Faroudja" technology is able to handle some tricky video content. On very large TV or projector screens, the difference could be noticed by experts or videophiles. When benchmarked with contents designed to test video performance, the OPDV971H will score higher than the DV-970HD.
- The OPDV971H has a DVI output for digital video that optimizes video performance; the DV-970HD has an HDMI output for both digital video and audio.
- The DV-970HD supports Super Audio CD (SACD) in addition to DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Audio CD etc. supported by OPDV971H.
- The DV-970HD has a flash memory card reader and USB interface while the OPDV971H does not.
- The OPDV971H front panel has a brushed aluminum finish; the DV-970HD front panel has a reflective mirror finish.
COMPONENT UPCONVERSION HACK:
Although not officially supported, it is possible for the DV-970HD to upconvert HD via component through this hack. This hack is not supported by HKFlix or Oppo Digital and may void your warranty. Use at your own risk. If you are unfamiliar with any of the following procedues, please do not attempt to perform this modification.
This firmware will allow you to alter any DV-970HD firmware to allow for component based upconversion (720p and 1080i) and the removal of HDCP compliance.
- First, go to http://www.box.net/shared/gkelmelv83 and download and extract the program called 970FMT.
- Go to the OPPO Digital Site and download the latest Official firmware Release. Save the *.ISO in an easily accessible location.
- Use WinRAR, ISOBust or other program which can extract the *.ISO. You should have a file called "935.BIN".
- Open 970FMT and click the folder under the option Original Firmware. Search for the "935.BIN" file.
- Click Start.
- Use Nero Burning Rom or other burning program where you can force a new CD compilation with "ISO 9660 Only (non-Joliet)" CD mastering. For Nero, follow these instructions:
- Open Nero and create a New Compilation.
- Click on CD-ROM (ISO) and then select the ISO tab.
- Ensure DATA mode is Mode 1 and that the File System is "ISO 9660 Only".
- Click New.
- Drag and drop the 935.BIN file. Now burn it.
- Put the CD into the DVD and follow the onscreen instructions.
Your DVD player now no longer supports CSS and HDCP encryptions. Enjoy component based upconversion and the ability to use the DV-970HD on non-HDCP compliant displays such as LCD PC monitors.
